Nemx Launches SecurExchange for Microsoft Exchange 2007
Fills Critical Gaps In Exchange 2007 Compliance Capabilities
Ottawa, Canada – May 28, 2008 – Nemx Software, leaders in active email compliance, content control and security solutions for Microsoft Exchange, today announced availability of the full line of SecurExchange products for Microsoft’s Exchange 2007 platform. Nemx is the first vendor to offer a full suite of rich, powerful and flexible email compliance functionality for the Exchange 2007 platform. SecurExchange now supports the full range of Exchange Server platforms (2003, 2000, and 5.5).
Accuracy and contextual comprehension are the cornerstones for the precise content detection necessary for effective email compliance and policy enforcement. Scanning content for the presence of simple key words and phrases, like Exchange 2007 does, produces high rates of false positive and false negative detections, resulting in frustration, soaring administration costs and leaving the organization exposed to unacceptable risk and potentially expensive liability.
SecurExchange enhances Exchange 2007 by transparently adding much more sophisticated content analysis supporting “concept” scanning. Concept scanning incorporates a variety of linguistic techniques, dictionaries, semantic inference as well as positional analysis to achieve substantially higher accuracy in all detection activities as well as significantly lower false positive and negative rates than Exchange 2007 on its own. For example, the presence of the term ‘confidential’ in the text of an attached Word document isn’t enough to really know if the document is actually a confidential document and should be blocked from being sent externally or automatically encrypted. However, if ‘confidential’ is contained in the footer of the document it is almost assuredly a confidential document. SecurExchange has the ability to differentiate between these cases and recognize the significance, or context, of detecting confidential in the footer versus elsewhere in the content and take the appropriate action. The focus on accurate contextual detection is evidenced in other SecurExchange capabilities. For PCI compliance, for instance, SecurExchange not only scans for a 15 or 16 digit number (depending on the credit card and starting with the specific first 4 digits used in credit cards) as you would with Exchange 2007, but also, performs the necessary check sum analysis to verify the number is in fact a valid credit card number, thereby reducing false positives.
Concept scanning addresses another major problem with the basic key word approach used in Exchange 2007, namely that you don’t know what terms users may choose to use. With over 30,000 commonly used words in the English language it is impossible to guess which ones will be used in any given email and too difficult and time consuming to define a rule with all the possibilities. By scanning for the ‘concept’ of confidential rather than merely the term, SecurExchange will automatically recognize that proprietary information, eyes only, secret, private and similar terms and phrases have the same context as confidential even if the user hasn’t specified any of these terms in their rule. These same techniques also enable SecurExchange to automatically detect plurals, different tenses, misspellings, and other derivatives without the need for users to specify all the variations.
“Without a doubt, Nemx’s SecurExchange features some of the most complete and comprehensive content analysis techniques and capabilities of any product I’ve seen in the market,” states Michael Osterman, president Osterman Research. “Its unique concept scanning is far more effective and context sensitive than the key word/phrase and limited semantic techniques used in many products.”
“Enforcing compliance policies without imposing an undue and costly administrative burden, creating user frustration and truly protecting the organization through contextually accurate detection is the value SecurExchange adds to any Exchange 2007 installation” stated John Young, president of Nemx Software Corporation. “It’s really about finding what the user means, rather than just what word(s) were used, that’s the difference between concept scanning and key words.”
