Header Filtering

Bulk email distributors deal in very large numbers of emails. As a result, to make their work as anonymous, fast and easy as possible, they generally have to follow a number of established shortcuts whenever they send spam.

Spam Manager uses header filtering to identify the patterns created by these shortcuts within message headers, and use them against their senders to identify bulk email as spam. Offering enhanced reliability and low administration costs, Spam Manager header filtering includes:

  • Common header patterns for spam - filters email with such common header patterns as messages without a local recipient, recipient or originator listed in the "To" and "Cc" fields, and messages with identical addresses in the "From" and "To" fields
  • Custom Field Pattern Matching - allows you to specify the header field you wish to filter for patterns (e.g. received, content-type, X-Spam-Flag and message-id). For example, in the spam header below:

    Microsoft Mail Internet Headers Version 2.0
    Received: from <external SMTP SPAM server> ([127.0.0.2]) by <local SMTP server> with Microsoft SMTPSVC(5.0.2195.5329);
    Sun, 2 Mar 2003 10:41:31 -0500
    Message-ID: <7a$901$hv9x-k-4-s@39oda>
    From: <external name>
    To: <internal name>
    Subject: a new way to sto start the new years jfqbz

    Header filtering can search specifically for SMTP IP addresses or domain names within the "Received" field (e.g. <external SMTP SPAM server>)

  • Foreign character set recognition filters - recognizes spam with characters that aren't legible to employees within your organization
  • Group-based inclusions or exclusions from rules - allows you to include or exclude any group or individual user from any set of rules, such as defining different rules for your Accounting and R&D departments, or adding extra limitations for temporary or student employees
