The following represent answers to questions
commonly handled by our support staff, along with some tips
and tricks that past and current customers have found useful.
These answers follow a few shorthand conventions for describing
user-interface procedures. Key combinations will be presented
as: Ctrl+Alt+Delete, which means that you should press and
hold down the Control, Alt and Delete keys at the same time.
Menu selections will be presented as: File | Open, which
means you should open the File menu, and then make the Open
selection.

- What happens if GoldMine

- I
keep getting the error message: "The custom form could
not be opened. Outlook will use an Outlook form instead. The
requested action could not be completed." How do I solve
this?
This problem is usually due to the fact that
Outlook is installed in Internet Mode Only (IMO), which
doesn't support extra services such as GoldExchange. Reinstall
Outlook 98 into either Workgroups or Corporate mode.

It depends on what you need to do. However,
we suggest that GoldMine should run at all times, to ensure
both Outlook and GoldMine have the most current information.
If GoldMine isn't running, GoldExchange will be unable to
update the GoldMine databases.

Although GoldMine is required in order to
run GoldExchange, it also has the ability to run in a silent
mode, which allows software like ours to log into GoldMine
without user interaction. Therefore, not all Exchange/Outlook
users require a GoldMine License.
To run GoldMine in silent mode, simply use
the following command (without the quotations): "GMW4.exe
/s:dde"

GoldExchange does not require Exchange Server.
It can function with any of the Microsoft Post Offices,
and all 32 bit Exchange clients, including Inbox, Windows
Messaging, Exchange 4.0/5.0 and Outlook 97/98 (in either
Workgroups or Corporate mode.) If you are using the Calendaring
features, however, either Outlook 97 or 98 (Workgroups or
Corporate mode) are required.

This is a problem we have been made aware
of, and are currently attempting to fix. The best way to
solve the problem so far is by installing Internet Explorer
4.0, which supplies some new .DLL's that are as yet unavailable
anywhere else. These .DLL's allow Word 97 to be opened correctly
when Nemx (and other) software is installed.

Creating debug log files can be done by adding
the following to the exchng32.ini file, which should be
located in your main Windows directory:
[NMXGAB Provider]; GoldExchange Address Book
debug=1
trace=file,console
[NMXGAB Client] ;GoldExchange Address Book
debug=1
trace=file,console
[NMXGSCH] ;GoldExchange Calendar
debug=1
trace=file,console
This will create the file names NMXGABEX.LOG,
NMXGAB.LOG and NMXGSCH.LOG in the main Windows directory.

When creating a group within GoldMine for
use with GoldExchange, you must use the reference field
in order to instruct GoldExchange on which email/fax address
to use.
If the reference number is the fax number,
then it is assumed to be a fax address. If the word "fax"
(case insensitive) is contained, it is assumed to be fax.
Otherwise it is assumed to be an Internet address.
If the contact's fax address within GoldMine
is blank (assuming the reference field is FAX), or if there
are no email addresses (for Internet address types), then
no member is included.
Nemx products don't support the "contacts"
area of Outlook.

These fields correspond to the same fields
within GoldMine's History Tab. They can be used in any fashion
required, such as using the result field to indicate whether
a mail message was sent in or out by entering "Out" under
the Send Tab and "In" under the Receive Tab.

If GoldMine is not active on a given machine,
GoldExchange will attempt to start GoldMine in silent mode
when it needs access to perform certain functions (see the
answer to question 3 above). GoldMine's silent mode doesn't
require a user/password to logon, and doesn't create a security
exposure because only applications can communicate with
GoldMine through its interface. When operating in silent
mode, the GoldMine icon is present on the System Tray (usually
on the bottom right corner of your monitor, along with the
time).
GoldExchange uses the registry to determine
where GoldMine has been installed when starting GoldMine
in silent mode. In a network configuration, you may need
to change this setting in the registry to point GoldExchange
(and any other GoldMine application) to the proper version
of GoldMine for activation.
The registry is a crucial part of the operating
system, and care must be taken when modifying entries within
it. Incorrect settings may render your system inoperable.
The following registry key is used to define
the location of GoldMine 4.0:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App
Paths\GMW4.exe
KeyName
(Default) should point to the full path and
filename of GoldMine
Path should point to the full path of where GoldMine is
located
(no '\' should be present at the end)

This is usually caused by the GoldExchange
calendar attempting to start GoldMine. If you don't
want this to happen, GoldExchange can start GoldMine in
silent mode without the need for an extra GoldMine license
(see the answer to question 3 above). To do so, simply
follow these instructions:
- Go into Outlook | Tools | Services |
GoldMine Address Book Properties.
- Deselect "Start GoldMine Automatically."
- Close down GoldMine, GoldExchange and
Outlook
- Restart Outlook and GoldExchange.
If the GoldMine banner
still appears when starting GoldExchange, then close
down Outlook, GoldExchange and GoldMine, and do the
following:
- Go to Start | Run,
find the directory containing GMW4.EXE is and select
it.
- At Start | Run, you should see something
similar like this:

- Add the following text at the end of
the line (Before the " if you have them):
This will attempt to start GoldMine
in silent DDE mode, which is required as a minimum.
- Select OK. If you are still getting
the GoldMine logon banner, then you need to add a
line to your GM.INI file, which is located in the
main GoldMine directory.
- Once you have found the file, add the
following (without the quotation marks): "GoldDir=<path
to GoldMine directory>\GMBase". Fill in the <path
to the GoldMine directory with whatever your path
is. If you don't have a GMBase directory, enter
your main GoldMine directory instead.

When using Outlook 97/98 with GoldExchange,
you may come upon this error message when using the calendar
synchronization component. This is a known Microsoft Error
message, which can be resolved as follows:
- Close Outlook.
- In Win95/NT4, right click the shortcut
for Microsoft Outlook, click Properties on the shortcut
menu, and then click the shortcut tab.
In NT 3.51, click the Microsoft Outlook icon, and then
click properties on the file menu.
- In the Target box on the Command Line
box, type a space after the path, and then type "/cleanfreebusy"
(without the quotation marks).
- Click OK.
- Start Outlook from the modified shortcut
to reset the Free/Busy time.
Once you have reset the Free/Busy time, you
can exit Outlook and remove the CleanFreeBusy switch from
the Outlook shortcut.
